In this article, I will answer the following question:
If I were Sam Altman, had $7T in backing, the human resources available and total buy-in from all of Microsoft (Satya Nadella), what would I do to reinvent the global semiconductor industry?
I would throw away 100% of computers and operating systems and write the last 100 years of human computer innovation off as “Technical Debt.” I would give the AI math and physics and let it tell me what a computer is.
I wouldn’t just try to innovate the processor manufacturing, I would want to innovate and replace the entire “stack” of what represents a computer including the Operating System, Kernel, Processor, Drivers from the ground up.
- I would want to innovate the development of robotic coordinated systems to build the processors and build the fabs that build the processors.
- I would want to take the concept of “vertical integration” to it’s final extent
- I would treat all physical aspects of the computer as a completely open source composable “liquid” including the kernel, drivers, middleware, operating system, instruction set
- I would start with the assumption that every man-made or man-designed aspect of an existing computer can be thrown out as legacy “dead weight technical debt”
- I would assume that AI can completely rewrite every aspect of the computer from the hardware all the way to the kernel and OS and eliminate all human language “code” in the system
- I would assume that AI can completely replace the design of microprocessors, kernel, OS with something alien, impossible to understand by humans
- I would start with the assumption that next-generation computers will contain 0% of what our current computers contain, other than using our past systems as a source of training data
- I would approach semiconductor manufacturing with a total blank slate, other than training an AI simulation on physics, geopolitics and math and then asking it to convert these into something that can crunch 0’s and 1's
In other words, my first step would be to throw away everything and restart from pure math and physics, and let the AI come up with what a computer should be. And how to go about building them.
The result would be a company that combined Tesla, Apple, Arm, NVIDIA, RISC-V and Intel into a single fused entity.
It would be a total break from the past, there would be no human written code in anything that comes out of the other end of this supply chain.
